UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics

In November, I visited UCLA to share some work on abolition medicine and digital health innovation as part of a faculty fellows lecture series in the Institute for Society and Genetics. It was great to be back at my alma mater, and to share my work with colleagues from the life sciences and social sciences across campus.

4S: Honolulu: Sea.Sky.Land.Endangered Ecologies. Solidarities

In November, I attended the annual gathering and joined a three-part panel co-organized by Shobita Parthasarathy, Jason Delborne, and Gwen Ottinger titled “Next-Generation Intersections of STS and Public Policy.” I gave a talk titled “Making Room for Carceral Tech Resistance in Digital Health Policymaking.”

In November, I visited the CTDS to give a talk on Digital Health Equity in Tempe, Arizona.

Electrophysiology Symposium for the Allied Health Professional, Scottsdale, Arizona

In November, I sat on a health equity panel at a CME event for health care providers working in electrophysiology to discuss the promises and limitations of the digital divide framing in digital health equity research.

Convening on Social Studies of Data, Arizona State University

In October, I participated in a convening to discuss research on the social study of data, sharing new work and inviting collaboration to expand my growing research program.

Futurecasting Exercise | “Towards a Future of Environmental Health,” Committee on Emerging Science for Environmental Health Decisions, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

In April, I participated in a futurecasting exercise with the National Academies, where we set out to identify core problems and research priorities for the future of environmental health.

Imagining Innovative Digital Health Futures | Management and Social Justice Conversation Series, The New School

In April, I moderated a panel discussion, co-organized with Latha Poonamallee, that considered the conditions necessary for the just pursuit of innovation in digital health. Melissa S. Creary, Jeremy Greene, and Al Pacino served as panelists.

The Politics of Health: 2020 International Health Humanities Consortium Conference
In March, I was scheduled to visit Vanderbilt University for the Politics of Health conference to give a talk titled “Illness Narratives, Health Activism, and the ACA Repeal Debate: STS Perspectives on the Politics of Expertise.” Unfortunately, this event had to be postponed in response to the pandemic.

AAA: Vancouver: Changing Climates: Struggle, Collaboration, and Justice
I gave a talk titled “How to Feel About Precarity: The Emotional Pedagogies of Health Activism Online.” The incredible panel on which I presented this work, convened by Susan Wardell, was titled “Performing Crisis, Practicing Care: Navigating the Moral Life of Health and Illness in Digital Environments.” How great to be surrounded by scholars doing vital work on health, morality, and mediation.

4S: New Orleans: Innovations, Interruptions, Regenerations
I chaired a panel titled “Embodied Narratives of Health, Self, Sexuality, and Knowledge,” and gave a talk during that panel titled “Fight For Our Health: Activism in the Face of Health Insurance Precarity” at the 2019 annual conference. I also ate some delicious shrimp po’boys.

Harvard STS Summer School: Expertise, Trust, and Democracy
I attended the Harvard STS Summer School held at the John F. Kennedy School of Government in August. My week in Cambridge was filled with illuminating discussions about how the core questions of STS can help to address public controversies and crises of trust.
